Sussy-Time!

Things girls with older sisters knew that we did not:
Everyone wears black to homecoming.
Eyebrows need to be edited, not deleted.
Tampons. Just… tampons.
This is a straightening iron.
But more often than not, just embrace your fucking natural hair and “do you.”
Finer points of bra technology developed since 1970.
Thongs can be used by humans outside of rap videos.
Where to buy low-cut athletic socks that don’t slip off of your heel when you run.
That thing where you roll your elastic-waist shorts or pj pants to make them look “put together” and “ass-hugging”.
How to get any illicit contraband not yet available to tweens.
What illicit contraband was.
How to talk to human boys who are not Sims.
He’s just not that into you.
He’s gay.
Just because you’ve buttoned all of the buttons does not mean you can put nothing on under a cardigan and wear it as a shirt, Christine.

My older sister Jennifer taught me NONE of these things. Stuff she did teach me about:
Politics. She got supes into the 1988 presidential election and because I am a follower, I tagged along. And by “tagged along” I mean “made bead bracelets that said DUKAKIS*BENTSEN for both of us and wept uncontrollably alongside her for several hours on election night.”
Notable feminists of the 20th Century. She started reading Gloria Steinem around age 13 and I have a distinct memory of her throwing herself in front of the TV when my mother and I were trying to watch the Miss America pageant sometime in the late 80s/early 90s.
Musicals. I mean, my whole family is into musicals, but my sister was kind of on the cutting edge when it came to obsessively listening to the Phantom soundtrack over and over in her room with the door closed. Remember when everyone was doing that? I later updated this trend and “put my own fun spin on it!” with the cassette tape of Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Starring Michael Damian From The Young & The Restless. Any dream will do, INDEED.
It goes without saying we were pretty cool cats. LYLAS, Jen!
